HAPPY 1 YEAR ANNIVERSARY, HARRISON!!!!
1. How did you find CrossFit?
I thought I was fit…that was until I met Sean Bruce in the fall of 2008. We were on a course in Halifax and had a lot of time to kill so we worked out together quite a bit. After the first WOD he ran me through I remember laying on the ground almost on the verge of passing out and thinking “I want MORE!!!”
2. What is your favourite CrossFit Exercise or WOD?
FIGHT GONE BAD!
In my opinion it epitomizes what CrossFit is. A true test of one’s heart; it pushes you to your mental and physical limits.
3. How long have you been CrossFitting for?
I remember walking into CrossFit Zone for the very first time on January 27th 2009 and falling in love with the place at first sight! Something about the fact that it didn’t look at ALL like a normal gym was what had hooked me. I did my baseline workout that day and I guess they say the rest is history. I can’t believe it’s already been one year!
4. What do you do for a living?
I am a Maritime Surface Officer (or MARS Officer) in the Canadian Navy. I am currently employed as a Bridge Watchkeeper on board HMCS PROTECTEUR. I am also a member of the ship’s dive team responsible for basic underwater maintenance.
5. What are your hobbies?
My passion in life has always been martial arts. I have been doing martial arts as long as I can remember. I did Wushu for 11 years as a child and am currently practicing Muay Thai which I have been doing for 4 years. I am also really into Chinese Lion and Dragon dancing (Come see me perform during the Chinese New Year Parade!) which I have been doing for about 3 years. Crossfit complements all my other hobbies nicely as it increases strength and stamina without making me bulky or slow.
Quickfact: Did you know Fight Gone Bad was made for UFC Lightweight Champion BJ PENN?
6. What are your goals?
1 Muscle up by the end of the year, 30+ pull-ups, Bodyweight Clean and Jerk
7. Why do you CrossFit?
One word=COMMUNITY!
The CrossFit Zone community is so great! Everyone is so supportive and caring it’s unreal. I’m a real lazy person believe it or not. Like most people, if I plan on working out on my own I am prone to skipping days because “I’m tired” or “I’m sore” or some other lame excuse. The people at CrossFit Zone make working out so much fun you actually feel bad if you skip a day.
On another note, I was in a really bad accident during the holidays where I was on crutches for 3 weeks and couldn’t drive. Within a few days of calling Deanna and telling her about it I received a ton of help and support from everyone at CrossFit Zone. They made sure I had everything I needed to recover properly. I dare anyone to go to any “gym” and find a group of people as great as the crew from CrossFit Zone.
8. Any Advice for future CrossFitters?
Do not be discouraged by CrossFit. No matter how hard a WOD looks you can always scale it back to your level without sacrificing the intensity of the workout. CrossFit will get you into the best shape of your life and all you have to do is just give it a shot!
