Barking Up a Different Tree….MOMAR Style!

Suzi Benn here.  On Saturday, September 21st a group of Crossfitters got together and tested their mettle at the14th season of the Mind Over Mountain Adventure Race (MOMAR) in Cumberland, BC.  For those who aren’t familiar with MOMAR, it’s an adventure race that tests your skills on the water, on the mountain bike and on your feet, all while utilizing your map reading skills to navigate to each of the designated checkpoints. There are 2 different courses to choose from – the 30km sport course or the 50km enduro course.  The majority of us chose the sport course with only one (crazy!) couple choosing the gruelling enduro.  The weather forecast the night before was calling for showers, but we lucked out with a beautiful sunny day, with only a short-lived sprinkle partway through.  We started the race on Comox Lake with a challenging 5km/8km kayak, then back to the beach to head out on the first of two trekking stages up one side of a mountain and down the other into the town of Cumberland where we picked up our mountain bikes for a big ass climb back up the mountain.  This was only my second MOMAR, but I would have to say it was much more difficult than last year.  There was a LOT of hike-a-bike up the mountain!  No amount of training could have helped us with this brutal grind.  Once we made it to the top, we dropped our bikes and went on a short trek for a couple more checkpoints then back onto our bikes for some sweet single track downhill ~ parts of the course were super muddy, but what’s an adventure race without a little mud?!?  Thankfully we all made it to the finish line a little worse for wear, but so proud of each other for getting out there and trying something so challenging on both a physical and mental level.  All in all, it was amazing weekend with lots of laughs and even more bruises (especially on me). Let’s hope we can all do it again next year!
