Lucas, FTW!

I don’t know about you, but my jaw is sore and scraped from hanging open and dragging on the ground while watching the CrossFit Games this weekend.  I also busted a proud gut from cheering on our main man Coach Scoots as he laid down some epic awesomeness and represented like a champ in every workout!

As a recap for those of you who may or may not have been watching, here’s the lay of the competition land in regards to Lucas’ performance from WOD to WOD:

In an early surprise, the Individual workouts kicked off on Wednesday prior to the scheduled Friday start of the Games with a triathlon style event (Swim 700m in open water with swim fins, Bike 8km on a one-speed bike over soft sand, Run 11km up and down Microwave Mountain).  Lucas came in 42nd in the first portion of “Pendleton 1” as he came out of the water, and finished 38th in the second portion, “Pendleton 2”, with the bike and the run.  Of note, Lucas surprised everyone by showing his Teen Wolf pelt and stripping down naked to towel off at the transition station coming out of the water.  This little trick would later be affectionately referred to in the Games media releases as “The Parker Incident”. That’s our Scoots!!  Later that same day, a fully clothed Lucas surprised everyone with his tenacity by working his way up throughout successive brackets to take a coveted wild card spot in the Camp Pendleton Obstacle Course, helping him to finish in 7th overall.

When the Games “officially” kicked off on Friday, the Individual competition continued with a simple Broad Jump (standing Broad Jump for distance), and Lucas displayed his explosive power by coming in 4th.  Following that, things got into full swing with a Ball Toss (Throw 4lb Medicine balls from GHD) and a “Track Triplet” (3 rounds for time of: 8 115lb Split snatch, 7 Bar muscle-ups, Run 400 meters).  Lucas ended up tying for the 4th spot in the Ball Toss, and finishing 16th in the Triplet. Finally, to finish out Friday’s events, Lucas completed the “Medball-HSPU” workout (3 rounds for time of: 8 150lb Med-ball clean, 100ft Med-ball carry, 7 Parallette HSPU, 100ft Med-ball carry) coming 14th overall.

Saturday’s events began back at the track field with a Sprint (Shuttle sprint for time: Run to 50yd line and back, Run to 100yd line and back), and Scoots came in first in his heat to massive cheers from the crowd, placing 3rd overall.  By his own account, he miscalculated by wearing his compression tights, which meant that the blood didn’t return to his muscles fast enough to recover well in the short rest time between the Sprint and the next event. He had some issues with his legs in trying to push the sled in the “Rope-Sled” workout (5 rounds for time of: 20-foot Rope climb, 20-yard Sled drive (+ 90lb)), but gave it his all and ended up tying for 39th place overall.

The next Saturday WOD was the “Clean Ladder” (1-rep Clean every 30s, +10lbs per rep, 245-385lbs (Deadlifts completed after failure count as partial rounds)), and Lucas successfully completed a 325lb lift, putting him in 22nd overall for that event.  Finally, Lucas finished out Saturday with an ugly looking “Chipper” (10 overhead squat, 10 box jump, 10 fat bar thruster, 10 power clean, 10 toes-to-bar, 10 burpee muscle-up, 10 toes-to-bar, 10 power clean, 10 fat bar thruster, 10 box jump, 10 overhead squat), but rocked it out to finish in 12th place.  A fantastic contribution to his total Games points standing, enabling him to compete in the Sunday Finals events, and evading the first cut.

A big day, Sunday kicked off with a unique “Double Banger” workout involving a sledgehammer and weighted banger blocks (For time: 50 Double-unders, Low banger, 50 Double-

unders, Down banger, 50 Double-unders, Mid banger). This event was 100% in Lucas’ wheelhouse, and he came a triumphant first in his heat, finishing 5th overall. Just what he needed to stay in the game and continue competing in the Sunday Finals!  He truly looks the Lumberjack part, too…

Things got REALLY exciting when the Games Officials announced that the final workouts would be three of the classic “Girls”: “Elizabeth”, “Isabel”, and “Fran”.  Lucas launched into “Elizabeth” (for time: 21-15-9 reps of: Clean (135 lbs), Ring dips), fighting days of soreness and fatigue, to finish in 14th place.  This put him just a hair’s breadth away from the second-to-last cut, and enabled him to compete in the next Finals workout.  “Isabel”(30 Snatch at 135lbs ) went down with all the athletes visibly struggling at the end of this amazing weekend of competition.  Scoots did his utmost, ending in 10th place overall.

While Lucas put forth an inspirational effort from start to finish in all his events, he just missed the last cut, and therefore did not get to compete in the final workout, “Fran”.  I’m sure at this point he was so tired that he didn’t mind ;)!  The good news, though, is that Scoots finished 15th OVERALL IN THE ENTIRE GAMES, which is an admirable leap from his 26th place finish at last year’s 2011 CrossFit Games.  We are blown away by what Lucas is capable of, and can’t wait to congratulate him in person when he gets home from L.A.!

On a different note, we have a historic occurrence on our hands here.  For the first time ever we have repeat winners of the CrossFit Games, with Rich Froning Jr. and Annie Thorisdottir taking first place overall for the men and women!  We also have some brand new names on the podium in 2nd and 3rd place: for the men, Matt Chan finished in 2nd and Kyle Kasperbauer took 3rd. For the women, Julie Foucher snagged the 2nd spot, and Talayna Fortunato took 3rd.

Hip, hip, hooray for everyone who did and didn’t make the podium this year!
