Spotlight Athlete – Brigit Jensen

CrossFit Victoria BC - Brigit the daredevil

1. How did you find CrossFit?
A friend in Australia is hooked on CrossFit, and his constant updates were peaking my interest. My friend posted a pic of his torso, and I was in! Great timing, since I was looking for something to get my muscles back after my accident.

2. What is your favourite CrossFit exercise or WOD?
I am starting to like things I didn’t before. My squats are getting better, and my skipping is improving. I enjoy the run/chin-up work outs, because you can definitely feel them working. I pretty much like anything that makes my body hurt so good!

3. How long have you been CrossFitting for?
Since May 09

4. What do you do for a living?
I’m a Radiation Therapist at the Cancer Agency. Basically, I zap people with a giant linear accelerator to get rid of their cancer, or its symptoms. No, it is not depressing! It is actually a great, positive place to work.

5. What are your hobbies?
Crashing my bike! I also enjoy reading books, running, playing bad tennis and hanging out with dogs. I am lucky to be able to spend time with the coolest members of my family, the little children! I also like to learn, so I am going back to school to do some courses starting this week. I like to drink red wine, probably a little too much. (The Zone Diet and I have a difficult relationship, but we are learning to love one another.) Lastly, I enjoy taking pics.

6. What are your goals?
Chin-ups. Real ones! Learning to love burpees, learning to do double unders without causing so many bruises, mastering support holds on rings, and completing real pushups. I would like to do a 10k in under an hour, and I really want to get back to DownHill racing, and be fitter and faster than ever before. I want to get strong!

7. Why do you CrossFit?
I do it to find my muscles again. I always competed in some form of athletics before, from swimming, skiing, and basketball, to mountain biking. One day I had a pretty good crash and did some damage. It was a tougher road back to recovery than I thought it would be. When the acute pain left after 2 years, I realized that my time away had robbed me of all my strength, and I had gained 50lbs. I needed to do something, but am not very good with just going to the gym. The support at CrossFit Zone means the world to me, from the coaches to the other athletes. People cheered me on the other day because I cleaned a 45lb bar. Normally, that shouldn’t be a big deal, but for someone coming back from injury, it is huge! I love the small victories because I know that they are leading me to getting back to being able to function as before. Except fitter and stronger!

8. Any advice for future CrossFitters?
Try it! Step out of your comfort zone. I never thought I would be lifting bars, or playing on the rings. I’m just so happy I can do it, and I love coming every day. I hope people who try it get that same feeling!
