Hey all,
So no doubt you all know about the Wilderness WOD coming up this Saturday – Craig and Adam have put together some super fun events for you to try and all in the wonder of the beautiful outdoors! What you might NOT know however is that Saturday is also an opportunity to try your hand at a 5k track run…
That’s right – 5k on the track! Good times for sure, and since it’s on a track, you KNOW it’s 5k and not an inch further. This run is part of the Victoria Track Series and is the third-to-last event for this summer. I’m heading out to try and break 20 minutes (PR in 2009 – 20:28) and am hoping some more of our Zoner gang will join me. All abilities and speeds are welcome and the price is right – $5 if it’s your first run of the year!
You can sign up on the day – just show up before 6pm at Jack Wallace Memorial Track (Oak Bay Rec Centre/High School) – races start at 630pm.
Our very own Chris “Chariots of Fire” Callendar will be out also, chasing the season points title and possibly running in both the 1500 and 5000m races.
I know it’s short notice but if you’re interested, check the link to the series (you can watch videos of prior races) and post to comments if you want to throw down 🙂

this is a no-underwear workout? are we alowed to wear shorts?
i have a new found love for running. as someone who grew up a swimmer, i find swimming tough as it is something i will never be as good at as when i was 14 years old. running is something i am constantly improving at. when i started cf, i couldn't do a couple of 400m in a workout without having to walk. now i am consistently in the pack on the runs, i find that on my rest days, when i do my 3.2km loop, my times are improving, as is my form and endurance. it is very empowering to see improvement.

"i run because it is fun"
i never thought i would believe it but now i live it!
Do you guys know what time the 5K will start? I'm working and will race up there right after shift change to cheer you on!!!
Running is for chumps.

Love-hate. I started running with the Running Room in 2006 and really enjoyed it for a year, and ran the TC 10k. It was then that I realized I was beginning to suffer from a hip/pelvis injury that was ultimately attributed to running. It started to affect any sort of lengthy physical activity – skiing, football, basketball, and eventually I had to do physio and ended up quitting running altogether after my first daughter was born because of the discomfort.
Not sure if my injury still exists or not, so far it has never flared up with Crossfit and haven't noticed it when playing sports in the last 18 months, so I'm hoping it's in the past. I enjoyed running but am very nervous about getting back into it. I would strongly recommend that anyone who takes up running gets professional advice on footwear and technique to avoid injuries.
I kinda dig running…
I have a mostly hate relationship with running. I have IT band issues and can't run more than ~3km on trails (or maybe half that on pavement) without stabbing pain in the sides of my knees. With a fat lot of physio last year, I managed to double that, but eventually decided that the cost wasn't worth the gain, and since we don't usually do *that* much running at the Zone, I just wouldn't worry about it and concentrate on other things instead. In a perfect world I would love to be able to run with Chris though.
I dislike running immensely. I find it mildly more enjoyable when it's not coupled with other workout components, though. A good 5K on the road with few hills = incredibly boring sometimes, but good nonetheless. Short hill sprints = good. 200-400m repeats on a track = ok. When it comes to Crossfit workouts WITH running I try not to burn myself out on the run…so I guess I jog. Jogging is great! I have a great relationship with jogging. Plus, you can make up time in other places (or at least try to…!). In a perfect world I would run like Krista because she is awesome, but that would involve a lot of running on a regular basis…and that makes me cringe.
It is a Hate – Love relationship. I really have a hard time motivating myself to go for a run, but when I am out I enjoy it and the more I can convince myself it is a good thing, I enjoy it more and more. Just have to get out!
Ha ha Sara! 🙂 It's funny, but I have a love/hate relationship with running too. When I'm doing it, and am on the trails…I LOVE IT! But sometimes I would much rather not get up a 7am on a weekend and just go for breakfast instead. I was thinking the other day that running is the only "sport" that has stayed a constant in my life…all the other "sports" have come and gone as I grow bored with them…but I can remember going for runs when I was 13 with my Dad.
p.s. Sara – I think you are awesome too! 🙂
I enjoy running a LOT. It has a way of relaxing my mind through the rhythm of strides and breathing, especially on trails when I'm not trying to run super hard. I went through a year of not being able to run after breaking 5 bones in my right foot (and being told by a doctor that I shouldn't think about running once it was healed) so I think that really increased my enjoyment of it.
In wods I look to either regenerate or make up time on the run so either way it works out well!

I love running. But I love running as a pastime, rather than solely as a fitness endeavor. That said, I DO run for fitness reasons. But the mental health benefits that I get from running are pretty much the main reason why I do it. I find that going for a good scenic run and enjoying the current weather (soaking up the temperatures, smells and sights as I jog along), really has a way of settling my jumbled thoughts and helping me feel centered. It's a great way to get outside, AND get some alone time. It's also one of the only times that I find I'm able to listen to my music solely for pleasure without distractions. I'm not all that fast, and my knees and back tend to act up every time, but I'm going to keep on keeping on.
