The overhead squat is possibly the best core strength exercise in existence. In the words of Coach Glassman: “The overhead squat is the ultimate core exercise…and peerless in developing effective athletic movement.” It demands flexibility, strength, balance, and is an essential component of the snatch. It is also an excellent measure of your core stability and control, and ultimately, your ability to generate effective and efficient athletic power.
As Dr. Deane discussed in the seminar the other night, all movement begins at the core and then moves to the extremity. In this workout your heart rate will be elevated and you will be breathing heavy after the run, so it is very important to remember to keep your core engaged and strong while working through the overhead squat and push jerk! Please keep in mind that when the core is tight there should be less wavering in the joints, ie – shoulders and hips. Coaches please offer some tips and the importance for your students.
