As you may or may not know, Crossfit HQ has decided to remove Josh Golden from the open and has declared that the box where he preformed is no longer allowed to validate scores. This means their athletes must now find another location to do their workouts or submit video. This all came about after this video surfaced, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zkxT37V0JE) showing the individuals lack of meeting the movement standards.
One of the key components in Crossfit is Intensity. Without we just don’t get the same results. But when the drive to move faster overcomes the validity of a movement, our sport has a problem. In my opinion CFHQ did the right thing and took the needed steps to show that this will not be allowed. It is a harsh punishment but needed, as we all want to compete on a level playing field.
So what does this mean to you? As you train and compete, the drive to push harder and faster must also be tempered with the quest to achieve perfection in your movements. I’m not suggesting you don’t push, but take pride in the movements you do and continually push to make them better. When you do compete, it is your responsibility to show to your judge that you have completed the movement, not their job to see if you have. If that means you pause for an extra half second to show that lockout or full extension, do that, in the long run it is faster than redoing the rep after your judge says no.
I really like our sport, I think it is a fun and exciting competition both to watch and compete. But like all sports, it is only fun when the rules are the same for everyone. There is no glory in a 28 round Cindy done with half squats and quarter push ups, and as this one individual found out, the consequences of not doing the standard can be severe. Take that time to be proud of your movements knowing that the work you did is at the best level it could be
