Is CrossFit a cult?
Is CrossFit a community?
Is CrossFit a sport?
What is a cult? Followers of an exclusive system of religious beliefs and practices
Here is a small checklist for a cult:
1. A special diet.
CrossFit promotes a diet… the Zone and Paleo.
2. Certain terminology that only people in the cult know.
WOD, AMRAP, Metcon, and benchmark workout names. If you asked someone on the street what their Fran time was, they would have no idea what you are talking about, but a CrossFitter would.
3. Special clothing.
All CrossFit gyms have their own t-shirts with crazy slogans on them, and affiliates collect shirts from each other.
4. A meeting place.
Go to your gym (box)
5. Associate only with other members.
That is left to your interpretation, but I personally find myself hanging out with more CrossFitters than non CrossFitters. I do live at the gym though.
But what a good cult to be a part of! A fitness cult! It is making you stronger mentally and physically. This cult has changed many lives.
Quote from CrossFit Watertown: “We CrossFit. We seek to better ourselves through an odd brand of functional fitness, and maybe, in this pursuit, we help others. We eagerly ask others to join us, to share this passion that drives us, becomes us, and, in a way, helps to complete us. Is that the definition of a cult? Perhaps. But, if it is, save me a place at the squat rack and pour another round of Kool-Aid: I’m buying.”
What is a community? The people with common interests living in a particular area; broadly.
We want your opinion…. Is CrossFit all of the above?
