Hey gang,
Sometimes we get so caught up in all the new media that’s coming out of this whole CrossFit thing that we forget about the great stuff that came before. Over the next several weeks, I’ll be guiding you through a look back at CrossFit’s beginnings with some classic workout footage from some original beasts.
This first video features Nicole Carrol, one of the original female athletes who trained out of the first ever CrossFit box. Here she is going heavy overhead with another strong CrossFitter. Keep in mind that Nicole is a very experienced CrossFit athlete and definitely pushes the envelope past the “safe” point as the weight gets heavy – which serves as a reminder that we need to know how to get out of trouble if a lift overhead goes awry!
Notice that they are doing jerks from behind the head as opposed to in the front – which may enable you to lift more weight with practice. The technical notes on the video are also good points to absorb.

This WOD looks fun!
Personally, I find a lot more value in the older CrossFit videos, as they provide tons in terms of teaching tools, evaluation of form, tips and tricks for success, as well as the fact that they feature the CrossFit “greats” who started this whole thing and were badass enough to make the rest of us want to follow.
That being said, the new videos are always designed to be inspirational, and are a good boost if you’re looking for some impetus to try harder yourself. I also find things getting quite commercialized, in terms of advertising and spinning a video to send a specific message or strike a particular feeling in the hearts of the watchers. Whereas the older videos are just raw footage of people doing what they do: doing the common, uncommonly well, with no intention other than getting their WOD on.
No matter which videos inspire you, it’s important not to forget the people who came BEFORE us in this sport of CrossFit, as they have much to teach us!
I may have missed this, but are there any class cancellations over this long weekend?
Sarah, the cancellations went out in the newsletter today, and will also be posted tomorrow in a blog on the site! 🙂
Love it, Turts, & looking forward to more in this series.
Also, regionals WODs are posted: http://games.crossfit.com/features/announcing-regional-workouts
All I have to say about those Regionals WODS is… Wow. Gonna be quite the competition!
