Athlete Spotlight – Kiersten Fisher

1. How did you find CrossFit?
Deanna told me about it last summer and then consistently mentioned that I should try it every time she saw me.

2. What is your favourite CrossFit exercise or wod?
So far I really liked Annie. Also the hundred, kettle ball swings and squat cleans. There’s others, but I can never get the names right… jerk, clean, push, press…

3. How long have you been CrossFitting for?
About 7 weeks.

4. What do you do for a living?
Executive Assistant to the Minister of Energy Mines and Petroleum Resources – Political Aid.

5. What are your hobbies?
Playing fastball and volleyball, reading, working out and spending time with family.

6. What are your goals?
I WILL do an unassisted pull-up! I’d also like to be in the best shape of my life before I have kids.

7. Why do you CrossFit?
Oh, let me count the ways… It’s fun, it’s hard, I like the challenge, the coaches and other athletes are super supportive and encouraging, I’m learning new things, variety is the spice of life (and workouts), I feel stronger, it’s helping me to eat better, the individual attention from coaches is awesome… Did I mention it’s actually fun? I look forward to my workouts.

8. Any advice for future CrossFitter’s?
Don’t be intimidated by the intensity of some of the athletes. They have been doing this for a long time.

Don’t push yourself beyond your capacity the first week/month. That kind of pain won’t motivate you to come back.

Do push yourself to the limit some days. There’s nothing quite like falling to the ground at the end of a WOD, sweat pouring off you and your heart thumping out of your chest.

Do check your ego at the door. Compete against yourself and at times against other athletes, but don’t let it get to you if you’re time is slower or you’re lifting lighter weight.

Do take advantage of the nutrition check-ins and skills sessions and Bring a friend, or 2 or 3!

Thanks Kiersten, so glad that you finally made your way out to give CrossFit a try!  I also wanted to let everyone know that you hit 2 home runs in one game! And I think you were saying that you had not hit a home run since you were very young.  Did CrossFit help or is it a coincidence??? Congrats Kiersten 🙂

Today’s Workout:

Buy In – 3 rounds of 10 leaping burpees

WOD – “Sunburn Sprints”

5 rounds:

  • 50 meter sprint (25m into the water and 25m back)
  • 10 jump squats or overhead squats w/ a log
  • 10 situps

Cash Out – go for a swim! Play some frisbee 🙂
